Powerboating

The RYA National Powerboat Scheme exists to meet the needs of those who use small, open powerboats for sport, whether for their own sake or in connection with another activity such as sailing, sub-aqua diving, canoeing or water skiing. The National Powerboat Scheme is applicable to sportsboats, RIBs, dories, launches and other boats that do not normally provide accommodation or cooking facilities.

Powerboat Level 1 Course

Length 1 day

This beginners course introduces you to techniques including launching and recovering a boat from a road trailer,   everyday boat handling and use of safety equipment

Powerboat Level 2 Course

Length 2 days

Minimum age 12
Assumed level of knowledge - nil

This course provides you with the skill and knowledge needed by a competent powerboat driver and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence.

There is no assumed level of knowledge. The lower age limit for the course is 12, candidates under the age of 16 are issued with an endorsed certificate. The course covers all that you need to know to for self sufficient powerboating at a basic level.   Course coverage includes: Launching, mooring, anchoring and recovery plus all the boat driving skills required for basic competence in a powerboat. After taking this course you should be a self sufficient powerboater in the right conditions aware of your own limitations and those of your boat.

Intermediate Course

Length 2 days

Minimum age 16
Assumed level of knowledge - You should be competent to the standard of the Powerboat level 2 course with coastal endorsement. This is not a course for beginners

This course covers the practical use of pilotage and passage planning by day on coastal waters, using both traditional and electronic navigational techniques. This course progresses you from the level 2, introducing pilotage, navigation and boat handling techniques for planning boats on coastal waters by day. This two day course enables you to plan and execute short coastal passages by day.

Advanced Powerboat Course

Length 2 days and includes a night navigation exercise

Minimum age 17
Assumed level of knowledge - You should be competent to the standard of the Powerboat level 2 course with coastal endorsement. This is not a course for beginners. You should have a knowledge of navigation and chartwork to the level of the Day Skipper shorebased certificate

This is the course for for leisure and professional boaters wanting to undertake more adventurous trips in small powerboats. Course content includes pilotage, navigational and boat handling techniques for planning boats on coastal waters by day or by night. This course gives you the ability to plan and execute coastal trips including return to a familiar port at night.
